ProctorU: Information for Instructors

**PLEASE NOTE: We recommend that all ProctorU sessions are created through the Moodle 1.3 External Tool for exams administered as a Moodle quiz activity. If you have previously created exam sessions on the ProctorU site (proctoru.com), and you are not administering exams through a third-party site, please transition to using the LTI external tool. More information is available in article 20432, Moodle: ProctorU 1.3 External Tool.

Where to Set Up Exams and the ProctorU Tool

You no longer need to go to the ProctorU site to set up proctoring sessions if the exam is adiminstered through the Moodle quiz activity.* Exams and proctoring should both be set up in Moodle using the LTI external tool. To use ProctorU to for an exam, you must do the following:

  1. Create the exam using the quiz activity. The quiz must have specific settings enabled to appear in the ProctorU tool: a password, a time limit in 15-minute increments, both an opening and closing time with 15-minute increments, and at least one question added to the quiz.
  2. Add the ProctorU 1.3 External Tool to the course. Students must click on this tool in the Moodle course to take any exam using ProctorU, and not on the quiz activity. This means that you may need to create more than one external tool, one for each proctored assessment.

For more information on the setup process, see article 20432, Moodle: ProctorU 1.3 External Tool.

*This applies only to exams administered with the Moodle quiz activity. If your exams are located at a third-party  publisher site (i.e., Cengage, Pearson, McGraw-Hill), you must set up proctoring at the ProctorU site. For more information, see article 20682, Proctoring a Third-Party Exam in Moodle

Selecting the Right Department

During the ProctorU 1.3 External Tool setup in Moodle, you will be asked to select a department. Selecting the department will determine the type of proctoring, the price of each exam, and reporting for each program. You will see the following options in the Department dropdown menu.

ProctorU department list as of 9/4/25

Select a department based on the following considerations:

  1. You should choose an option for the department associated with your course's program: LSU Online, LSU campus, or Online Distance Learning (ODL). For reporting purposes, please adhere to the following:

    Department Scenario
On-campus course Course contains only students in a campus program, taught in LSU Moodle
LSU Online course -Course contains only LSU Online program students, taught in LSU Moodle
-Course contains LSU Online program students and possibly students cross-enrolled from a campus course, taught in LSU Moodle
-Course contains LSU Online program students and is cross-enrolled to CE Moodle (may also include campus students)
ODL Course contains only ODL program students in CE Moodle

  2. Select your program with the proctoring type you want to use: Live+, Review+, or Default (Record+). See ProctorU Proctoring Services Overview above for more information on these proctoring types.

Student Scheduling

The scheduling process for students depends on the proctoring service selected by the instructor in the ProctorU 1.3 External Tool setup:

  1. If you are using the Live+ or Review+ service lines, students should schedule at least 72 hours in advance (to avoid premium scheduling fees) by clicking on the ProctorU external tool in the course.
  2. If you are using the Record+ service line, no scheduling is needed. Students can log in to the course at any time during the exam window and click on the ProctorU external tool. This should open a connection to ProctorU and begin the exam session.

Student Accommodations

When you receive an accommodations request from a test-taker who has provided an Accommodation Letter from Disability Services, you will need to submit an accommodation request through ProctorU.

Exams through Moodle, MyMathLab, or other online testing platforms and proctored by ProctorU:

When you are notified that one of your students has registered accommodations with LSU Disability Services, you must submit an accommodation request to ProctorU. After applying settings for the approved accommodations in the third-party exam, submit a request for accommodations at the Meazure Learning site. This must be done prior to the start of the exam window. Provide the following information in your request:

  • The student's name and email address in ProctorU
  • The course and exam name
  • The accommodation(s) approved by Disability Services
  • Any other details, if necessary

You should submit accommodations to ProctorU no later than 72 hours before the exam window opens. You do not need to provide any information about the student's disability.

Exams administered through LSU Testing & Evaluation Services QuestionMark Perception and proctored by ProctorU:

Submit the request for accommodations at the Meazure Learning site and email otes-testing@lsu.edu prior to the scheduled exam(s) with the information listed above. Note: LSU Testing & Evaluation Services will set the amount of time for the exam.

All accommodations should be submitted at least 72 hours in advance of the test taker's exam.

ProctorU does not need any information about the test-taker's disability or reasoning for why an accommodation is requested.

ProctorU Syllabus Information

In order to use ProctorU or another remote proctoring service in a course, students must be informed of costs in advance, at the point of registration (LSU has applied a notification to students on the fee bill) and in the course syllabus. Students should also be aware of the technical requirements to test using ProctorU's Guardian browser. ProctorU provides instructions for each service type:

Include as much of this information in your course syllabus as possible to avoid confusion.

You may also wish to include a general statement on proctoring like the following:

ProctorU will/may be used for testing in this course. This service enables remote proctors or proctoring software to access your personal computer’s screen, webcam, and audio system to monitor your exam session for academic integrity violations. [LSU campus courses:] Additionally, there is a cost for this service. LSU does not receive any portion of this cost. [LSU Online/ODL courses:] There is no additional cost for proctoring services.

The following assessments in this course will be proctored, and the associated ProctorU cost is listed [if applicable] for each: [List each exam/quiz and the ProctorU cost, then a total of the ProctorU costs for the course. If this is an LSU Online or ODL course and there is no proctoring fee, indicate $0.]

[If you are using Live+ or Review+. THIS APPLIES TO ALL PROGRAMS:] Please be aware that you may also be charged a premium scheduling fee for scheduling an exam within 72 hours of the exam window. These fees are as follows:

  • 24–72 hours prior to the exam window: $8.00 USD (Take It Soon)
  • Fewer than 24 hours prior to the exam window: $12.00 USD (Take It Now)

Viewing Sessions and Reports in ProctorU

At the ProctorU site (proctoru.com), instructors can find data on upcoming and past exam sessions. The dropdown menus at the top of the page contain links to view scheduled exams, session data for pending or completed exams, user information, and activity and cancellation reports. Explore these items to track your students’ activity. Looking at exam sessions, including recordings and chat records, provides necessary information when investigating possible academic integrity breaches.

For more information on using these tools, see the ProctorU support page on Reporting Documentation.

Academic Misconduct

In the case of a suspected academic integrity concern, ProctorU will flag the incident and issue an incident report, which is sent to the person listed as the contact in the exam information. You can then investigate the report by reviewing exam session data (see the previous section on reporting).

If you receive an incident report, and after review, believe there is a possible academic integrity concern, you will need to report the incident to Student Advocacy & Accountability for a possible violation of the LSU Code of Student Conduct. For information on this process, review the page Understanding Academic Integrity at LSU Student Advocacy & Accountability. Use the Academic Misconduct Reporting Form to report any possible violations of the LSU Code of Student Conduct.
