Moodle: Activities & Resources: External Tools: Access Pearson

The Access Pearson LTI 1.3 activity is a publisher tool which allows instructors to link Pearson course content (MyLab, Mastering, Revel, eText, or Live Response) to Moodle courses. The Access Pearson external tool enables deep linking, which means that students can directly access activities and resources through the Moodle site. Deep linking also allows for gradebook synchronization, allowing instructors to manually trigger or set automatic synchronization at regular intervals (every 15 minutes). Please note that this gradebook synchronization only works through the use of the Access Pearson LTI 1.3, and not through adding course links to the Pearson site.

A note about support: Because the external tool activity links your Moodle course to an external website, most issues encountered in this tool should be addressed through Pearson customer support or the specific Pearson customer representative who helped set up the course. The LSU Faculty Technology Center can assist with any Moodle issues and can work with the tool's support team on Moodle-related gradebook sync concerns.

Adding the Access Pearson Activity to Your Course

Importing From Another Course

If you are importing or restoring course materials from a previous term or blueprint course, you must establish a new connection between Access Pearson and your new Moodle teaching course. To do this:

  1. Perform the Selective import or Simple restore of content, including the Pearson activities, into your new teaching course.

  2. Click into the imported or restored Access Pearson activities in your new teaching course. Follow the instructions provided by your Pearson representative for copying your previous Pearson course.

  3. Check that your course activities have mapped to your new Pearson course site.

Creating Brand New Pearson Activities
If you are not restoring or importing Pearson activities and need to add the tool to your course:

  1. Follow the steps in Moodle: Add an LTI External Tool and toggle Access Pearson to "Show in activity chooser."

  2. When creating the first Access Pearson activity, provide an Activity name in the settings, then Save and return to course. DO NOT click the Select content button at this stage.

  3. After saving, click back into the same Access Pearson activity and follow the instructions provided by your Pearson representative to set up your Pearson course. Important note: If you are setting up assignments in Pearson's Mastering product, do not set any assignments point totals to zero. This will break your Moodle gradebook. Instead, in step 3: Organization, set the assignment to practice or extra credit. You can also change the item weight to zero for this assignment in the Moodle gradebook.

  4. After setting up your course on the Pearson site, repeat the steps to Add an External Tool and add a new Access Pearson activity to your course page. This time, choose the Select content option. Select all course tools, assignments, and eText links that you would like added to this location of your course.

Note: Graded Pearson activities will appear as manual entries in the Moodle gradebook after the first student attempt. Gradebook synchronization can take up to 15 minutes.
